Why the steel certification in your fuel tank matters more than you think
When you are comparing steel fuel tanks, they can look remarkably similar on paper. They may have the same capacity, similar dimensions and the same claims around heavy-duty construction. But there can be a significant difference in the steel they are made from — where it comes from, what standard it meets and whether there is certification to prove it.
That matters because a steel fuel tank is only as reliable as the materials and manufacturing behind it.
A customer came to us recently needing a diesel tank suitable for conditions down to -6°C. He had been quoted an imported steel tank and asked the supplier for the steel’s temperature rating and the certification to support it.
The paperwork wasn’t available.
When he spoke to Durotank, he asked the same questions. Because our tanks are manufactured using BlueScope Australian steel, we could provide information about the steel used and its suitability for the application.
And that highlights an important point when comparing Australian-made and imported steel fuel tanks: don’t just compare the tank. Compare the steel and the documentation behind it.
Not all steel fuel tanks are the same
“Heavy-duty steel construction” sounds reassuring, but it isn’t a material specification. Two steel tanks can look almost identical while being manufactured from steel of different grades, standards and origins.
What matters is whether the manufacturer can tell you:
- What grade of steel has been used
- Which standard the steel complies with
- Where the steel was manufactured
- Whether it can be traced back to the mill
- What temperatures and conditions it is suitable for
- What documentation is available to verify those claims
For a fuel tank expected to perform for years in Australian mining, agricultural, civil and industrial environments, those details matter.
1. Steel traceability and mill certificates
One of the biggest differences between certified steel and steel of unknown origin is traceability.
BlueScope Australian steel is supplied with documentation that allows the material to be traced and its properties verified. A mill test certificate provides information about the steel’s grade, chemical composition and mechanical properties.
Structural steel plate used in Australia is manufactured to recognised standards such as AS/NZS 1594 and AS/NZS 3678. This gives the buyer something more substantial than a general claim about the tank being made from “quality” or “heavy-duty” steel.
When comparing an imported steel tank, ask the supplier for the mill certificate for the steel used in that particular product. If the steel cannot be traced back to its source and specification, it becomes much harder to verify exactly what you are buying.

2. Temperature rating and impact toughness
Temperature performance is another area where the steel grade and certification become important. Steel can behave differently as temperatures fall. Some grades can lose ductility at low temperatures, increasing their susceptibility to brittle fracture.
Impact toughness can be measured using Charpy V-Notch testing, which assesses how the material performs at specified temperatures. This was particularly important for the customer who needed a tank suitable for temperatures down to -6°C. It wasn’t enough for a supplier to say the tank would be suitable. He needed documentation to verify it.
Some imported tanks may use general-purpose steel grades such as Q235B, manufactured to Chinese standard GB/T 700. Different grades within the standard have different impact-testing requirements, so simply knowing that a tank is “steel” does not tell you enough about how that material has been tested.
For sites exposed to low temperatures, including alpine areas, high-country mining operations and cold inland locations, ask what steel grade has been used and what testing supports its suitability for the conditions.
3. Consistency and quality control
Certification is also about consistency. When steel is manufactured under established quality-control systems and supplied with traceable documentation, its properties can be verified from batch to batch. This matters when the steel is being cut, formed and welded into a fuel tank that needs to perform reliably over the long term.
The question isn’t simply whether imported steel can be good quality or whether overseas mills can manufacture high-quality steel. The important distinction is whether the supplier can demonstrate what steel has actually been used in your tank and provide the documentation to support its specification.

4. Corrosion protection should be verifiable too
The steel itself is only one part of long-term tank durability. The coating system protecting it is also important. Quality coating systems should be applied to a defined specification rather than simply described as “painted” or “corrosion resistant”.
Depending on the tank and application, protection may include systems manufactured or applied to recognised standards, with documentation available to verify the process and coating specification. When comparing tanks, ask what coating system has been used, how it has been applied and what documentation is available.
5. Australian manufacturing and local support
Where the tank is manufactured also affects what happens after it arrives on site. An Australian-made tank gives customers access to local technical knowledge, spare parts and support if something needs attention later in the tank’s working life.

Imported steel isn’t automatically poor-quality steel
This distinction is important.
The argument isn’t that all imported steel or imported tanks are poor quality. Overseas manufacturers can produce excellent steel and excellent tanks.
The issue is verification.
If an imported steel tank has the appropriate material certification, traceability, testing and manufacturing documentation for your application, those documents should be available for you to review. If they aren’t, you are being asked to accept the specification without the evidence behind it.
For critical fuel storage, that is an important difference.
Four questions to ask before buying a steel fuel tank
Whether you’re considering a Durotank or another steel fuel tank, ask the supplier:
- What grade and standard is the steel?
Ask for the mill test certificate or supporting material documentation. - What temperatures is the steel suitable for?
If your site experiences low temperatures, ask what testing verifies its impact toughness. - How is the steel protected against corrosion?
Ask what coating system has been used and what specification it meets. - Where was the tank manufactured and what local support is available?
Consider access to technical support and spare parts over the tank’s working life.
These questions make it easier to compare steel tanks on something more meaningful than capacity, appearance and price.
