AdBlue Tanks: How to Store and Handle Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Properly

AdBlue Tanks: How to Store and Handle Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Properly

AdBlue, also known as Diesel Exhaust Fuel, plays a crucial role in helping diesel engines meet emissions regulations by reducing harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Today more and more industries are adopting cleaner technologies for reasons such as:

  • Reducing environmental impact and carbon emissions
  • Meeting stricter government regulations
  • Enhancing operational efficiency
  • Improving brand reputation and market competitiveness

Industries like construction, agriculture, railways, marine, and more, are seeking to use AdBlue to balance regulatory compliance with operational efficiency.  Because of this, proper storage and handling of AdBlue is essential to maintaining its effectiveness and protecting your equipment.

In this guide, we explore best practices for storing and handling AdBlue using purpose-built tanks.

Firstly, what is AdBlue?

AdBlue is a non-toxic, colourless fluid made from urea and deionised water. It is used in in modern diesel engines to cut down harmful emissions. When injected into the exhaust stream, AdBlue converts nitrogen oxide emissions into harmless nitrogen and water vapour. This helps your engine stay clean and compliant.

What Are the Benefits of Using an AdBlue Tank?

Using a dedicated AdBlue tank takes the stress out of storing and dispensing DEF. Here’s how it helps:

  • Keeps DEF clean: Protects against contamination from dust, fuel, or other fluids.
  • Maintains quality: Shields DEF from heat and sunlight so it lasts longer.
  • Saves time: Built-in dispensing systems make top-ups quick and easy.
  • Improves safety: Bunded tanks reduce spill risks and keep worksites compliant.
  • Ready for the job: Whether stationary or mobile, they’re made to suit real work conditions.

If you’re using AdBlue, a proper tank isn’t just handy—it’s a must-have.

Why Proper Storage Matters

Like anything, AdBlue can go bad if you don’t store it right. Heat, sunlight, and dirt are its worst enemies. When DEF gets contaminated or breaks down, it can cause big problems for your equipment. It can clog up your system, reduce engine power, or even shut down your machinery. None of which you want when you’re on the job.

Proper storage matters to:

  • Avoid breakdowns: Bad DEF can trigger engine warning lights or even reduce engine power.
  • Save money: Clean DEF helps your machinery run better and last longer.
  • Stay compliant: Using clean, properly stored DEF keeps your vehicles within emissions rules.
  • Prevent downtime: Less risk of issues means fewer delays on the job.

Maintaining the purity of AdBlue through proper storage ensures your machinery runs efficiently and remains compliant with emissions standards.

Ideal Conditions for Storing AdBlue

To protect the integrity of AdBlue, storage conditions must be carefully managed:

  • Temperature: Store between -11°C and 30°C. DEF will freeze below -11°C but can be thawed and used again if uncontaminated.
  • UV Protection: Keep tanks out of direct sunlight to avoid urea degradation.
  • Ventilation: Store in a well-ventilated area to prevent pressure build-up and reduce exposure to heat.

For outdoor storage, consider insulated or temperature-controlled tanks to maintain stability year-round.

Safe Handling Practices for AdBlue

Proper handling is just as important as storage. Follow these best practices:

  • Use only AdBlue-approved containers and dispensing equipment
  • Never mix with diesel, oil or other fluids
  • Wear gloves and eye protection when handling
  • Keep containers sealed when not in use to prevent contamination
  • Clean all fittings and nozzles regularly

Even small amounts of contamination can render DEF unusable, so attention to hygiene is critical.

Shelf Life and Maintenance

DEF has a typical shelf life of 12 months but may degrade faster in hot climates. To maximise its lifespan:

  • Store in a cool, shaded area
  • Monitor expiry dates and rotate stock
  • Check for signs of contamination such as discolouration, strange odours, or crystals

Regularly inspect tanks for leaks, build-up, or residue. Clean tanks and lines according to manufacturer guidelines.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Avoid these pitfalls to keep your DEF system running smoothly:

  • Using non-approved tanks or transfer pumps
  • Leaving containers open or unsealed
  • Storing in areas exposed to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures
  • Refilling from unclean or previously used containers
  • Not labelling tanks clearly, increasing the risk of cross-contamination

Choosing the Right AdBlue Tank

Investing in a dedicated AdBlue tank ensures the fluid remains clean and secure. Look for features such as:

  • High-quality steel for enhanced durability
  • Bunded (double-walled) tanks for spill containment
  • Lockable cabinets for tamper protection
  • Integrated dispensing systems (hose reel, flow meters, nozzles)
  • Mobility options for smaller operations or remote use

The right tank setup not only extends the shelf life of DEF but also streamlines refuelling and handling.

We had a great experience working with Durotank on our order for a 2,400L water cart trailer, set up for firefighting and tree watering. Their team was responsive throughout the process and delivered exactly what we needed on schedule, despite a very tight timeframe. The build quality is excellent - it’s clear a lot of care and expertise went into the manufacturing. We also value being able to support an Australian-made company and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Durotank for both their product quality and service.

We purchased Durotank’s 2400 Litre poly water trailer with fire-fighter pump and hose reel, plus optional dribble bar and batter sprays attached.

Our property, Duxton Farm, borders the Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. Because of this, early season burning is extremely important to prevent uncontrollable bushfires later in the dry season. The trailer has been an invaluable asset to fire control – always full and ready to go when the call comes.

We’ve found it to be well balanced, empty or full, with the baffle ball system effectively controlling surge. We have had no issues with set-up, towing it with either a Landcruiser or Hilux.

Overall, we’re extremely happy with our purchase and the support from the Durotank team. We’ll be back. quote-02
