Which Industry requires the most fuel?
Fuel is essential to generate energy with all industries requiring some type of fuel to power operations, but which industries require the most fuel? Certain industries have a greater demand and are more reliant on fuel than others. Industries require fuel for a range of different purposes, such as transportation, electricity, manufacturing, harvesting, production. Tailoring fuel storage solutions to meet requirements at an organisation level is often best suited with custom fuel tanks which can take into factor accounts such as size, fuel type, portability, geolocation, and purpose.
What is fuel?
Fuel refers to any substance that has stored energy that can be released to generate power.
What are the main types of fuel used in Australia?
Australia uses a range of fuel types for power which includes fossil fuels and renewable energy sources. The fossil fuels used to generate energy include oil, gas and and coal, whilst the renewable energy sources are made up of biomass, hydro, wind and solar.
In 2019 – 20 this was the breakdown of fuels used in Australia
| Fuel Type | Total Usage PJ | Percentage |
| Oil | 2241.2 | 37.3 |
| Coal | 1706.6 | 28.4 |
| Gas | 1647.2 | 27.4 |
| Renewables | 418.8 | 7.0 |

Different Industries that require large amounts of fuel
Transportation & Fleet Services
Transportation requirements top the table in fuel reliance. Within this sector, road transportation makes up a significant percentage with data showing that 72% of fuel usage in this sector in 2019-20 was for road transport. There has been a high growth in diesel usage by passengers, light commercial and freight. In 2021 the diesel vehicle fleet across Australia constituted 5.3 million vehicles.
With fuel an indispensable factor for transportation of fleets, bulk fuel purchasing is an important and efficient way to ensure best fuel prices are achieved. Bulk fuel storage agreements allow fuel to be stored at any refuelling depots, rail transport and distribution networks. Bulk fuel storage is essential, to ensure best possible pricing is achieved across refuelling operations.

Manufacturing and Construction
Within both manufacturing and construction, fuel is a foundation of daily operations with slowdowns and fuel shortages leading to prolonged breaks, reducing efficiency and even halting operations. With fuel an essential resource, storage requirements are an important factor of consideration.
In construction for larger industrial projects, there are frequent diesel fuel deliveries used to power key infrastructure and development operations.

Mining
Another industry that requires a tremendous amount of fuel power is mining. Used to power crucial equipment during operations such as earthmovers, drillers, belts, cranes, conveyors, and other heavy equipment, fuel lies at the heart of mining operations. With portability a key factor, especially in remote locations and difficult terrain, bulk storage solutions including tanks and trailers are a major consideration to maximise efficiency. As mining operations use expensive machinery that must be well-maintained, it is also crucial that fuel quality is not compromised as this can cause significant damage to the machinery.
Products we recommend for Mining: Durotank’s Self- Bunded Fuel Tank, Durotanker Fuel Trailer and Self- Bunded DAB Tanks.
Agriculture
Agriculture relies on fuel to power vehicles and heavy-duty machinery to maintain agricultural properties and livestock farms. Whether for planting, harvesting or day-to-day tasks fuel powers a range of machinery with efficient operation crucial. As agricultural properties are often widely dispersed and in remote locations, consideration is also needed towards increased fuel requirements during harvest season, mobility, and agricultural terrain.
