Top 5 Reasons to Invest in Self Bunded Fuel Tanks

Why Self Bunded Fuel Tanks Are a Smart Investment

In today’s demanding industrial landscape, reliable and safe fuel storage is essential. Whether you operate in mining, agriculture, construction or transport, managing your fuel supply efficiently can make a huge difference to productivity and operating costs.

A self bunded fuel tank, sometimes called a tank within a tank, is designed with two layers: an inner tank that stores the liquid and an outer wall that provides an extra layer of protection. This double-walled design means that if the inner tank leaks, the outer wall safely contains the spill. This makes self bunded tanks one of the most secure and environmentally responsible ways to store diesel, petrol or other hazardous liquids.

For businesses working in remote or challenging environments, self bunded tanks deliver convenience, safety and long-term cost savings. They help minimise downtime, improve operational efficiency and ensure compliance with environmental regulations, all while keeping fuel accessible exactly where it’s needed.

1. Enhanced Safety and Environmental Protection

One of the main advantages of self bunded tanks is their superior safety performance. The double-wall structure provides built-in spill containment, preventing leaks from reaching the surrounding soil or groundwater.

This design not only protects the environment but also ensures your business complies with Australian Standards such as AS1940: The Storage and Handling of Flammable and Combustible Liquids. By investing in a self bunded fuel tank, businesses can operate confidently knowing their systems meet regulatory requirements and reduce environmental risks.

The tanks can also be fitted with emergency vents and lockable fittings as an option to further enhance safety. Our bigger tanks come with overfill protection as a standard feature. In industries such as mining or civil construction, where spills can have serious consequences, these safeguards are invaluable.

Because self bunded tanks don’t require separate external bunding or concrete containment systems, they also reduce the environmental footprint of your setup. This makes them ideal for companies aiming to meet sustainability targets without compromising efficiency.

2. Cost-Effective Long-Term Solution

While the upfront cost of a self bunded fuel tank can be higher than that of a single-wall tank, the long-term financial benefits are substantial.

By storing fuel onsite, you can purchase in bulk at lower prices, reducing your dependency on fuel deliveries and minimising refuelling downtime. Over time, these savings far outweigh the initial investment.

The double-walled design also protects the fuel from contamination, a common problem that can lead to costly equipment repairs or downtime. With cleaner, uncontaminated fuel, your machinery and vehicles run more efficiently, extending their lifespan and reducing maintenance costs.

Self bunded tanks also reduce infrastructure expenses. Since the containment system is built into the tank, you don’t need to spend extra on external bund walls, drainage systems or spill-control areas.

In addition, self bunded tanks require minimal maintenance compared to traditional storage systems. Their robust design means fewer repairs, lower servicing costs and longer service life, making them a truly cost-effective investment for any fuel-reliant operation.

3. Versatility and Convenience

Self bunded fuel tanks are available in a wide range of sizes, capacities, and configurations to suit different operational needs. From compact 1,000-litre portable tanks to 150000-litre industrial units, there’s a model for every scale of operation.

These tanks are designed for easy transport and installation while empty. Many models feature forklift pockets and lifting lugs, so they can be moved. Because they require little site preparation, self bunded tanks are also ideal for remote or rugged environments where building permanent fuel infrastructure isn’t practical. Simply place the tank on a level surface, connect your dispensing system and you’re ready to go.

Their versatility also extends to fuel type and application. Whether you need to store diesel, petrol or AdBlue, Durotank can customise a system to meet your specific requirements.

For example, the Duro Cube range provides a compact, transportable solution for worksites that need fuel mobility, while larger stationary tanks are perfect for centralised fuel storage.

By choosing a configuration that matches your operational demands, you can streamline logistics, improve refuelling efficiency and maintain full control over your fuel supply.

4. Durability and Longevity

Built to withstand Australia’s toughest conditions, Durotank’s self bunded fuel tanks are manufactured from high-grade steel or UV-stabilised polyethylene, depending on the model. This construction ensures resistance to corrosion and weathering.

The tanks can handle extreme temperature fluctuations, from scorching outback heat to coastal humidity and freezing inland winters. Anti-corrosion coatings provide additional protection against rust and degradation, making them suitable for long-term outdoor use.

Every Durotank unit undergoes rigorous quality testing to guarantee leak-proof performance and structural integrity. With proper maintenance, a high-quality steel self bunded tank can last over 20 years, far exceeding the service life of most single-wall tanks.

The strength and reliability of these tanks also contribute to workplace safety. Fewer leaks and structural failures mean fewer risks to personnel, equipment and the environment.

Ultimately, investing in a durable, Australian-made self bunded fuel tank provides assurance that your fuel storage will remain secure and compliant for years to come.

5. Improved Efficiency and Fuel Management

Modern self bunded fuel tanks are not just storage units, they are smart management systems that improve operational efficiency.

Many Durotank models can be fitted with automated fuel management systems, allowing you to monitor fuel levels, track usage and detect abnormalities in real time. This technology provides valuable insights into fuel consumption patterns, helping businesses identify waste and optimise refuelling schedules.

Alerts for low fuel levels, temperature changes or potential leaks mean you can act immediately before small issues become major disruptions. Automation also reduces human error, streamlines reporting and enhances accountability across multiple sites.

For industries managing large fleets or remote assets, these systems simplify logistics and eliminate guesswork. You’ll always know how much fuel you have, where it’s being used and when you need to restock without manual checks.

In combination with Durotank’s reliable fuel trailers and portable refuelling systems, businesses can achieve a fully integrated, efficient and transparent fuel management setup.

We purchased Durotank’s 2400 Litre poly water trailer with fire-fighter pump and hose reel, plus optional dribble bar and batter sprays attached.

Our property, Duxton Farm, borders the Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. Because of this, early season burning is extremely important to prevent uncontrollable bushfires later in the dry season. The trailer has been an invaluable asset to fire control – always full and ready to go when the call comes.

We’ve found it to be well balanced, empty or full, with the baffle ball system effectively controlling surge. We have had no issues with set-up, towing it with either a Landcruiser or Hilux.

Overall, we’re extremely happy with our purchase and the support from the Durotank team. We’ll be back. quote-02
