The Environmental Benefits of Self Bunded Tanks: Protecting Your Site for the Long Run

Fuel storage has changed a lot in the past few years. Businesses in mining, agriculture, transport and construction are looking to minimise environmental impact, keep sites safe and stay compliant with Australian regulations. The old approach of using single-wall tanks and building separate concrete bunds is slowly being replaced by a smarter solution: self bunded tanks.

A self bunded tank is more than a fuel container. It is a built-in environmental safeguard designed to reduce spills, protect the land beneath your site and simplify compliance from day one. If you want to see what these tanks look like in practice, explore Durotank’s full range of self bunded fuel tanks engineered specifically for Australian industry.

Why Self Bunded Tanks Matter for Environmental Protection

A Double-Wall System That Prevents Soil and Groundwater Contamination

The biggest environmental advantage of a self bunded tank is its dual-layer structure. The inner tank stores the fuel. The outer tank acts as a second layer of protection, capable of holding more than 100 percent of the tank’s capacity.

This design makes a major difference. If a leak ever occurs inside the tank, the outer wall catches it before it can reach soil, waterways or underground water tables. It is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce contamination risk.

For sites that need a transportable option, the self bunded duro cubes provide the same level of protection while being easily moved around your property or project site.

Consistent Spill Prevention Without Complex Site Works

Traditional fuel storage often requires earthmoving, concrete bund construction and engineered drainage systems. All of this contributes to cost, delays and environmental disturbance.

Self Bunded tanks remove these issues entirely. Because the bund is built into the tank, there is no need for additional containment works. Most sites simply prepare a level pad and their tank is ready for use.

If you want to see compact options that fit tight sites with minimal preparation, look at the self bunded smart cubes designed for easy placement and quick setup.

Less Risk of Small, Unnoticed Leaks

Many environmental incidents come from slow leaks rather than dramatic accidents.

Self Bunded tanks minimise this problem because:

  • The interstitial space catches leaks early
  • Steel construction resists corrosion

When your operation requires mobility and safety in one package, Durotank’s diesel and AdBlue trailers offer the same environmental protection while allowing easy movement around the site.

Supporting Compliance and Reducing Environmental Risk

Aligned With Australian Standards and EPA Requirements

Australian environmental regulations are strict. A spill that reaches soil or water can lead to fines, investigations and costly remediation work. Self Bunded tanks make compliance significantly easier because their design naturally aligns with key Australian Standards and EPA guidelines.

For industries where compliance is non-negotiable, the self bunded smart cubes offer stationary tanks that fit regulatory expectations right out of the box.

Built-In Safety Features Reduce Human Error

Spills often happen during refuelling. Overfilling, incorrect hose handling or unsecured fittings can all lead to fuel loss. Modern self bunded tanks include features that reduce these risks, such as:

  • Overfill alarms
  • Spill trays
  • Lockable fill points
  • Anti-siphon protection
  • Safe pump placement

For high-flow applications, Durotank’s rapid refuel options give you fast, controlled dispensing while maintaining a high level of safety.

Long-Term Sustainability Benefits

A Longer Lifespan Means Less Waste

A well-built self bunded tank can last 20 years or more. That longevity reduces waste, minimises the need for replacements and lowers the environmental footprint associated with manufacturing new tanks. This extended lifespan also means fewer disruptions to operations, as there’s less frequent downtime for tank replacement or repairs. It allows businesses to plan and invest more efficiently, knowing their fuel storage solution will remain reliable for decades.

Durotank’s equipment is engineered for harsh Australian environments.

A Better Fit for Remote and High-Risk Environments

Remote operations and large sites often struggle with spill prevention because fuel must be moved and transported frequently. Self Bunded tanks and trailers support safer mobility without compromising protection. Their robust construction ensures stability even in uneven terrain, and integrated containment reduces the risk of accidental spills during transport. This makes them particularly suited for industries like mining, agriculture and construction, where safety and reliability are critical.

For mobile refuelling, the poly diesel trailers are lightweight, tough and excellent for remote agriculture and rural properties.

Self Bunded Tanks Create Cleaner, Safer and More Efficient Worksites

Environmental responsibility can affects insurance, compliance, public trust, and operational efficiency. Self Bunded tanks provide a practical way to reduce risk, avoid environmental damage, and maintain control over your fuel storage. Their double-wall design ensures any leaks are contained within the tank, protecting soil and groundwater while helping you stay compliant with Australian standards.

Beyond environmental protection, self bunded tanks simplify site management. There’s no need for additional concrete bunding or complex drainage systems, saving time and installation costs. Many models are also relocatable, giving you flexibility for temporary worksites or expanding operations. If you are planning an upgrade or setting up a new site, you can explore Durotank’s full range of fuel tanks to find the model that best fits your needs.

Cost Efficiency and Reduced Maintenance

Self Bunded tanks aren’t just safer, they’re also highly cost-effective. By eliminating the need for separate concrete bunds or containment structures, businesses save significantly on construction, labour, and long-term maintenance costs. The robust steel construction ensures a durable, long-lasting solution, often exceeding two decades with proper care.

Routine inspections and simple maintenance are usually enough to keep the tank operating safely, reducing downtime and the risk of costly repairs. Additionally, the integrated bund design minimises the need for ongoing environmental monitoring and clean-up, making self bunded tanks an investment that protects both your operations and your bottom line. For businesses managing multiple sites, the efficiency and reliability of these tanks can lead to noticeable operational savings over time.

Versatility Across Industries

Self Bunded tanks are trusted across a wide range of industries, from mining and agriculture to transport, civil construction, and fleet management. Their sturdy construction, compliance with Australian environmental standards, and built-in spill prevention make them ideal for both permanent installations and temporary setups.

Operators can safely store diesel, Adblue, coolant, oil, ULP, or other petroleum-based products on-site, while benefiting from flexible solutions like trailers or modular tanks for projects that require mobility. Whether you’re managing a large-scale mining operation, a rural agricultural site, or a construction project in a remote location, self bunded tanks provide a practical and reliable solution that adapts to your operational needs without compromising safety or efficiency.

Safety and Compliance Made Simple

Self Bunded tanks simplify safety and regulatory compliance on worksites. Their double-wall design prevents any leaks, reducing the risk of spills, environmental contamination, and potential fines. Many models are fully compliant with Australian Standards and EPA regulations, giving operators peace of mind that their fuel storage meets legal requirements.

In addition to regulatory compliance, self bunded tanks enhance on-site safety for workers. The integrated bund prevents fuel from escaping into surrounding areas, lowering fire hazards and keeping the work environment cleaner. For businesses managing multiple locations or high-volume fuel storage, self bunded tanks provide a reliable, low-risk solution that protects employees, assets, and the environment.

We purchased Durotank’s 2400 Litre poly water trailer with fire-fighter pump and hose reel, plus optional dribble bar and batter sprays attached.

Our property, Duxton Farm, borders the Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. Because of this, early season burning is extremely important to prevent uncontrollable bushfires later in the dry season. The trailer has been an invaluable asset to fire control – always full and ready to go when the call comes.

We’ve found it to be well balanced, empty or full, with the baffle ball system effectively controlling surge. We have had no issues with set-up, towing it with either a Landcruiser or Hilux.

Overall, we’re extremely happy with our purchase and the support from the Durotank team. We’ll be back. quote-02
