How Self-Bunded Tanks Help You Stay Compliant

How Self-Bunded Tanks Help You Stay Compliant with Australian Fuel Storage Regulations

Safe and efficient fuel storage is non-negotiable in industries such as agriculture, construction, mining and transport. Australian regulations surrounding fuel storage are among the most stringent in the world, and for good reason, mishandled fuel can lead to serious environmental damage, safety hazards and costly fines. That’s why self-bunded tanks have become the gold standard across the country.

We’ll explore how self-bunded tanks help businesses stay compliant with Australian fuel storage regulations, reduce environmental risks and improve operational efficiency. Whether you’re managing a large-scale operation or a small fleet, understanding this compliance landscape is critical and self-bunded tanks simplify it.

What Is a Self-Bunded Tank?

A self-bunded tank is essentially a tank within a tank. The inner tank holds the fuel, while the outer tank serves as a protective layer to contain leaks or spills from the inner tank. This design provides built-in secondary containment, a feature that meets and often exceeds Australian regulatory standards for fuel storage.

Key Features:

  • Double-wall containment to prevent external leakage
  • Overfill protection (for 10,000L tanks & up)
  • Vents and pressure relief valves
  • Lockable access for security
  • Mobility options for remote and mobile refuelling

Why Compliance Matters: Australian Fuel Storage Regulations

Why Compliance Matters: Australian Fuel Storage Regulations

Australia’s fuel storage regulations are shaped by multiple frameworks, including:

  • EPA (Environmental Protection Authority) requirements (state-based)
  • AS 1940:2017 – The Storage and Handling of Flammable and Combustible Liquids
  • Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulations
  • Local council and fire authority guidelines
  • Dangerous Goods (Storage and Handling) Regulations

Failure to comply can result in heavy fines, legal liability, environmental cleanup costs or worse, loss of life due to fire or explosion. Self-bunded tanks simplify compliance by meeting core regulatory expectations by design.

1. Meeting Secondary Containment Requirements

One of the most important mandates in Australian fuel storage compliance is secondary containment, which is required to prevent soil and groundwater contamination in the event of a leak.

How Self-Bunded Tanks Help:

  • The integrated double-wall design provides 110% containment, a core requirement under AS 1940.
  • Unlike single-skinned tanks that require additional bund walls or concrete containment pits, self-bunded tanks are ready to deploy without costly bunding infrastructure.
  • Reduced risk of non-compliance due to simplified installation and minimal site works.

Regulation met: AS 1940, EPA bunding requirements

2. Simplified Compliance with AS 1940:2017

The AS 1940 standard is the key national reference for safe fuel storage and handling. It dictates requirements for:

  • Tank design and construction
  • Safe separation distances
  • Spill containment
  • Fire protection

Self-Bunded Tanks Align With AS 1940 Because:

  • Their design facilitates safe positioning with adequate clearance
  • Built-in vents and emergency valves meet fire and explosion safety guidelines

Many Durotank models exceed minimum compliance to future-proof your site from regulatory changes.

Regulation met: AS 1940:2017 – All sections applicable to flammable and combustible liquids

3. Environmentally Compliant Fuel Storage

Environmental protection is a core focus of every EPA office across Australia. The Environmental Protection Regulations vary by state but generally require:

  • Spill prevention and control
  • Safe fuel delivery and transfer
  • Monitoring of leaks and environmental risk

Why Self-Bunded Tanks Are the Sustainable Choice:

  • Built-in spill containment eliminates the risk of ground or water contamination
  • Leak detection capabilities alert users early
  • Easy to relocate and clean, reducing ground disturbance during installation and decommissioning

Using self-bunded tanks protects your business from breaching EPA licensing terms or contaminating sensitive land or groundwater.

Regulation met: EPA storage guidelines across all states and territories

4. Reducing Workplace Safety Risks (WHS Compliance)

Under Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws, employers must ensure the safety of workers in hazardous environments including where flammable fuels are stored or handled.

How Self-Bunded Tanks Improve Site Safety:

  • Reduce the need for manual fuel handling with job-appropriate  automated pumps and nozzles
  • Lockable cabinets and secure fittings prevent unauthorised access
  • Integrated fire safety components, such as pressure relief vents and optional flame arresters
  • Clearly marked safety labels and grounding points

Safer fuel storage reduces incident risk, ensures easier staff training and keeps your site aligned with WHS codes of practice.

Regulation met: WHS Act and Regulation (Safe Work Australia), Dangerous Goods Handling

Why Compliance Matters: Australian Fuel Storage Regulations

5. Easier Fuel Transport Compliance (for Mobile Operations)

In remote or mobile work environments (mining, civil construction, agriculture), fuel must often be transported between job sites.

Self-Bunded Tanks Simplify Transport Because:

  • Durotank’s transportable self-bunded tanks are designed to carry combustible liquid.
  • Certified lifting lugs and forklift pockets ensure safe and legal movement
  • Our Duro Cube can be safely transported full – only combustible liquid, not flammable.

This makes them the preferred choice for industries that require safe mobile refuelling and compliance across multiple locations.

6. Streamlined Council Approvals and Site Setup

When installing fuel tanks, many businesses must obtain local council permits, environmental assessments or fire authority approvals. Tanks that meet or exceed AS 1940 and EPA standards usually streamline the approval process.

Advantages of Self-Bunded Tanks for Planning Approvals:

  • Pre-certified designs are easier to get approved
  • No need for external bunding means faster setup and fewer site modifications
  • Flexible capacity options (from 500L to 100,000L) meet different risk profiles

This makes your job easier, whether you’re establishing a permanent depot or a temporary refuelling site.

Support for compliance: Easier approval from local councils and regulators

7. Cost Savings Through Long-Term Compliance

Compliance isn’t just a legal requirement, it’s also a financial strategy. The cost of cleaning up a spill or failing an EPA inspection can be far higher than the investment in a compliant tank.

Self-Bunded Tanks Deliver ROI Through:

  • Lower installation and infrastructure costs
  • Reduced maintenance due to durable, corrosion-resistant materials
  • Avoidance of fines, site shutdowns or fuel loss
  • Resale value thanks to compliance and portability

By choosing self-bunded tanks, you’re investing in a future-proof, regulation-ready fuel solution.

Common Fuel Storage Compliance Mistakes and How Self Bunded Tanks Help

Common Fuel Storage Compliance Mistakes and How Self Bunded Tanks Help

Fuel storage regulations in Australia are strict and for good reason. Here are some common compliance mistakes and how Durotank self bunded tanks prevent them:

  • No bunding or secondary containment
Self bunded tanks have a double-wall design that meets the 110% containment requirement, eliminating the need for separate bunding.
  • Spill and overfill risks
Durotank tanks include level dipsticks, with our smart tanks offering spill containment areas to help avoid environmental damage during refuelling. Larger tanks also include anti-overfill valves to prevent spillage.
  • Incorrect tank placement
Our tanks are designed with safe clearance in mind and come with documentation to assist in meeting AS 1940 separation distance requirements.
  • Lack of leak detection
Built-in interstitial port for dipping or monitoring makes it easier to detect and respond to leaks before they become major environmental hazards.
  • Security and access issues
Lockable cabinets and tamper-proof fittings protect fuel from theft and ensure only authorised personnel can access the tank.

Avoiding these issues not only helps you stay compliant but also protects your staff, your reputation and your bottom line.

We had a great experience working with Durotank on our order for a 2,400L water cart trailer, set up for firefighting and tree watering. Their team was responsive throughout the process and delivered exactly what we needed on schedule, despite a very tight timeframe. The build quality is excellent - it’s clear a lot of care and expertise went into the manufacturing. We also value being able to support an Australian-made company and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Durotank for both their product quality and service.

We purchased Durotank’s 2400 Litre poly water trailer with fire-fighter pump and hose reel, plus optional dribble bar and batter sprays attached.

Our property, Duxton Farm, borders the Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. Because of this, early season burning is extremely important to prevent uncontrollable bushfires later in the dry season. The trailer has been an invaluable asset to fire control – always full and ready to go when the call comes.

We’ve found it to be well balanced, empty or full, with the baffle ball system effectively controlling surge. We have had no issues with set-up, towing it with either a Landcruiser or Hilux.

Overall, we’re extremely happy with our purchase and the support from the Durotank team. We’ll be back. quote-02
