Having driven a B Double Truck from Melbourne to Darwin on many occasions, Greg from Murchison Transport knows the difficulties large trucks face when trying to fill up at regular service stations. To alleviate this problem in his locale at Moama, Greg was interested in creating an easily accessible refuelling site that other transport companies could use to fill up trucks and that would complement his existing transport business. Having worked with the team at Durotank before, Greg approached the team to see what they would recommend for his business venture.
Requirements for Murchison Transport
To offer the best solution, Jerrod and the team needed to know a little more about the project itself and the customers Greg was hoping to service. The intended audience was primarily transport companies looking for a simple, efficient refuelling solution that could easily accommodate their big trucks and trailers. Such customers would require refuelling with a high flow rate so trucks did not waste a lot of time filling up their tanks , alongside reasonable pricing in line with the volume of fuel being purchased. After learning more about Greg’s proposed project, the team suggested that with the right refuelling options, Greg could not only service transport companies but also local traffic which could bring in additional revenue.
Solution
Based on the requirements for Murchison Transport, the team recommended a 100,000L Self Bunded Smart Fuel Tank. As the biggest standard Smart tank available, this would allow Greg to take advantage of better bulk buy prices courtesy of the higher volumes of diesel being purchased at one time. It would be equipped with Franklin sub-pumps, an easy-to-use, reliable 24/7 credit card reader and two high mast hoses, with an option to switch fuel flow rate. Having two hoses ensured fuel could be dispensed at a high and a low rate in accordance with the vehicle being refuelled. This meant that both transport companies and local customers could be effectively serviced from the one unit. Due to the need for 24/7 access, LED flood lights were also required to ensure the fuelling site always had full lighting to ensure safe refill.
With an on-site installation crew already commissioned, Darryl and the production team at Durotank provided regular updates on the progress of the tank, keeping the on-site team in the loop every step of the way. The Smart tank went through our 3 point quality check points; after manufacture, after painting and a full check after fitout, ensuring the best quality product arrived at Murchison transport depot.
Results
Durotank supplied a 100% Australian made and manufactured, 24/7 refuelling site on time and on budget. Two and a half years on, Greg is still delighted with the solution.

Our property, Duxton Farm, borders the Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. Because of this, early season burning is extremely important to prevent uncontrollable bushfires later in the dry season. The trailer has been an invaluable asset to fire control – always full and ready to go when the call comes.
We’ve found it to be well balanced, empty or full, with the baffle ball system effectively controlling surge. We have had no issues with set-up, towing it with either a Landcruiser or Hilux.
