Poly Diesel Trailers

Poly Diesel Trailers: The Best Solution for Spring Harvest Season

Spring marks one of the busiest and most critical times of the year for farmers across Australia. It’s a period where every minute counts, and any hold-ups can quickly eat into productivity and profits. Keeping your machinery fuelled and ready is vital, and that’s exactly where poly diesel trailers come into their own.

Renowned for their toughness, flexibility and reliability, poly diesel trailers have become a staple on many farms. But how do you know if one’s right for you? And what should you look for to make sure it meets your specific harvest needs?

This guide will help you understand why poly diesel trailers are so effective during harvest, how to select the right size and features, and why Durotank is a trusted name for Aussie-made trailers, built tough to handle whatever the season throws your way.

Why Poly Diesel Trailers Are a Game-Changer During Harvest

Why Poly Diesel Trailers Are a Game-Changer During Harvest

Harvest season often feels like a race against the clock. Combines, tractors and other vital machinery need constant refuelling to keep  the pace. Making trips back to a central fuel depot or waiting in queues for refills isn’t just inconvenient; it can cost you valuable hours and disrupt your entire operation.

Poly diesel trailers solve this problem by enabling on-the-spot refuelling, right where your machines are working. This means less downtime and more time in the field.

What makes them stand out?

  • Durability: Made from tough, high-density polyethylene, these tanks resist rust, corrosion and damage from knocks and bumps that are common on farms. Plus, they’re UV stabilised to withstand the harsh Australian sun without cracking or fading.
  • Lightweight and easy to tow: Poly tanks weigh significantly less than steel, reducing the load on your towing vehicle and improving fuel efficiency.
  • Cost-effective: Poly trailers usually cost less upfront and require less maintenance over time, offering excellent long-term value.
  • Tailored to you: Whether you need extra storage compartments, specialised pumps or specific hose lengths, poly diesel trailers can be customised to suit your unique requirements.

Matching Your Trailer to Your Vehicle

How to Calculate Your Fuel Needs for Harvest

Choosing the right trailer starts with understanding your fuel demands.

  • Estimate machinery consumption: Calculate how many litres per hour your combines, tractors and other equipment consume, then multiply by the expected hours you’ll be operating.
  • Think about refill distance: If your fuel source is far from your fields, a larger trailer can save you time by reducing the number of trips.
  • Balance capacity and manoeuvrability: Bigger trailers carry more fuel but can be heavy and tricky to move around the farm due to vehicle towing capacities. Smaller trailers are easier to handle but might require more frequent refuelling stops.

For most farms, trailers with capacities between 1000 and 2500 litres strike a good balance. This capacity is large enough to keep machinery running through long shifts but compact enough to tow safely.

Matching Your Trailer to Your Vehicle

It’s crucial to ensure your towing vehicle can handle the full weight of your loaded trailer safely.

  • Check your vehicle’s towing capacity: Remember, diesel weighs approximately 0.84kg per litre. So, a full 2000-litre trailer plus the weight of the trailer itself could easily total over 2 tonnes.
  • Consider axle setups:
    • Single axle trailers are lighter and easier to steer but have lower weight limits.
    • Dual axle trailers provide better stability and can handle heavier loads, which is ideal on uneven terrain.
  • Ensure hitch compatibility: Your trailer’s coupling system needs to match your vehicle’s hitch for secure towing.

Why Polyethylene Tanks Are Perfect for Australian Farms

Why Polyethylene Tanks Are Perfect for Australian Farms

Poly tanks offer many benefits that make them the preferred choice for most Australian farmers:

  • Resistant to corrosion: Unlike steel, poly doesn’t rust, saving you maintenance headaches and prolonging tank life.
  • UV stabilised: Built to endure intense sun exposure without cracking or fading.
  • Lightweight and impact resistant: They’re easier to tow and stand up to bumps and vibrations which are common in farm work.

Steel tanks do have their place where extra ruggedness is needed, but for everyday harvest tasks, poly tanks provide a smart balance of durability and convenience.

Choosing the Right Pump and Dispensing Equipment

Storing fuel is only part of the solution. Getting it to your machinery quickly and efficiently matters too.

  • Electric pumps are suitable for lighter refuelling tasks and low-volume needs.
  • Diesel or hydraulic pumps offer faster flow rates, perfect for refuelling large machinery quickly.
  • Hose reels add flexibility, allowing you to reach around big equipment without hassle.
  • Flow metres help you keep track of fuel usage.

Chat with your supplier about your typical refuelling demands to pick the right combination.

Safety and Legal Requirements You Can’t Ignore

Transporting and towing fuel has strict safety rules, and for good reason.

  • Trailer brakes: Most Australian states require trailers over a certain weight to have brakes, either electric or mechanical types.
  • Lights and reflectors: These must meet road safety standards and be fully functional.
  • Weight limits: Stay within your vehicle and driver’s license’s permitted weight to avoid fines and hazards.
  • Safety chains and emergency brakes (on 2t plus trailers): These are critical fail-safes if a hitch fails.

Always double-check your state’s transport authority guidelines and work with your trailer provider to ensure compliance.

Keeping Your Poly Diesel Trailer in Top Shape

A bit of regular care goes a long way toward ensuring your trailer lasts season after season:

  • Inspect the tank, hoses and fittings for leaks or wear before and after use.
  • Clean the tank regularly to prevent fuel contamination from dirt or water.
  • Service your pump and dispensing equipment as per the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Store the trailer in shade or under cover when not in use to protect from UV damage.

Proper maintenance helps prevent costly downtime during your busiest periods.

Budget Considerations: Think Beyond the Sticker Price

While initial costs matter, it’s important to factor in the total cost of ownership:

  • Poly tanks generally require less maintenance and last longer, saving you money in the long run.
  • Lighter trailers mean better fuel economy when towing.
  • Well-kept trailers hold their value better if you decide to sell.
  • Avoid hidden costs from frequent repairs or failing to meet compliance standards.

Durotank offers competitive pricing and flexible financing options, making it easier for you to invest in quality gear that pays off over time.

Getting the Most Out of Your Poly Diesel Trailer This Harvest

Harvest season is a high-pressure time. Use these tips to make sure your trailer supports your operation smoothly:

  • Plan your refuelling logistics to reduce machine downtime by positioning trailers close to where they’re needed.
  • Train your crew to use pumps safely and perform quick daily checks.
  • Track fuel consumption with flow metres to catch leaks or theft early.
  • Keep up regular maintenance on tires, hoses and pumps throughout harvest.
  • Be flexible by adjusting pump speeds to suit changing field conditions.

Following these steps will help you cut downtime, save money and maximise your harvest efficiency.

Environmental Benefits of Using Poly Diesel Trailers

Environmental Benefits of Using Poly Diesel Trailers

In today’s farming landscape, sustainability is becoming just as important as productivity. Poly diesel trailers offer several environmental advantages that can help reduce your farm’s impact while maintaining efficiency.

  • Reduced Fuel Waste: With precise dispensing equipment like flow metres and well-designed pumps, poly diesel trailers help minimise spills and fuel loss, ensuring you use every litre effectively.
  • Lightweight Design Saves Fuel: Because polyethylene tanks are much lighter than steel alternatives, towing them consumes less fuel overall, lowering your carbon footprint.
  • Durability Means Less Waste: Poly tanks resist corrosion and damage, which means fewer replacements and less material ending up in landfills over time.

By choosing a poly diesel trailer, you’re not only investing in reliable equipment but also supporting more sustainable farming practices that protect the land for future generations.

We had a great experience working with Durotank on our order for a 2,400L water cart trailer, set up for firefighting and tree watering. Their team was responsive throughout the process and delivered exactly what we needed on schedule, despite a very tight timeframe. The build quality is excellent - it’s clear a lot of care and expertise went into the manufacturing. We also value being able to support an Australian-made company and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Durotank for both their product quality and service.

We purchased Durotank’s 2400 Litre poly water trailer with fire-fighter pump and hose reel, plus optional dribble bar and batter sprays attached.

Our property, Duxton Farm, borders the Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. Because of this, early season burning is extremely important to prevent uncontrollable bushfires later in the dry season. The trailer has been an invaluable asset to fire control – always full and ready to go when the call comes.

We’ve found it to be well balanced, empty or full, with the baffle ball system effectively controlling surge. We have had no issues with set-up, towing it with either a Landcruiser or Hilux.

Overall, we’re extremely happy with our purchase and the support from the Durotank team. We’ll be back. quote-02
