Fuel Tanks 101 What To Consider Before Making a Purchase

Fuel Tanks 101 What To Consider Before Making a Purchase

Fuel Tanks are essential for industries like agriculture, mining, construction, and transportation, providing a dependable and secure fuel supply for daily operations. Choosing the right tank is vital for efficient operations, regulatory compliance, and safety. Durotank, a trusted Australian manufacturer, specialises in durable fuel storage solutions tailored to various industries’ specific needs.

Understanding Your Fuel Storage Needs

Before purchasing a fuel tank, assess your specific storage requirements.

Types of fuel: Identify whether you need to store diesel, adblue, oil or other fuel types, as different fuels require specific tank materials and designs.

Fuel Consumption & Storage Requirements: Estimate your daily or monthly fuel usage to choose the right-sized tank.

Regulatory & Environmental Considerations: Ensure compliance with local fuel storage regulations, including environmental protection measures and safety standards.

Types of Fuel Storage Tanks

Above-Ground Fuel Tanks

Above Ground Fuel Tanks are visible and easily accessible, making inspections and maintenance straightforward. They suit various industries, including farming, construction sites, and industrial applications. These fuel tanks also reduce the risk of groundwater contamination and simplify regulatory compliance. They are typically made of steel or polyethylene for durability and corrosion resistance.

Underground Fuel Tanks

These storage tanks are buried beneath the ground, making them invisible and aesthetically less intrusive. They are frequently used in confined spaces, commonly found at gas stations and in commercial fuel storage facilities. These tanks are space-saving, suitable for restricted areas and provide protection from weather conditions, ensuring long-term storage and compliance with environmental regulations. Underground Fuel Tanks are constructed from corrosion-resistant steel with protective coatings to prevent leaks and contamination.

Portable Fuel Tanks

Portable tanks are designed for easy transport and fuel supply in remote locations, making them essential for industries such as agriculture and mining. They provide flexible fuelling solutions for heavy machinery and equipment operating in remote areas. They are often used for emergency fuel storage in critical operations. Their robust construction allows for safe and efficient handling and can be quickly deployed to different locations. It’s crucial to secure tanks properly during transport, comply with fuel transport regulations, and use appropriate dispensing equipment.

Key Features to Look for in a Fuel Tank

Capacity and Size

  • Assess your operational needs to select the right tank size and capacity to prevent frequent refuelling.

Material and Durability

  • Steel vs Polyethylene: Steel offers superior strength and longevity, while polyethylene offers lightweight and corrosion-resistant benefits. This is important to reduce the risk of leaks and extend fuel tank lifespans.

Compliance with Standards

  • Ensure your bulk fuel tank meets industry standards such as AS1940 for Australia, which outlines crucial fuel storage, handling, and safety requirements. This covers tank design, location, fire protection, and environmental considerations, ensuring compliance with industry best practices and regulatory frameworks.

Safety Features

Fuel storage safety is essential for preventing accidents, protecting the environment, and maintaining regulatory compliance. A well-designed fuel tank incorporates safety features that mitigate fuel handling and storage risks. Some features include

  • Overfill protection: Prevents fuel spillage and enhances operational safety.
  • Leak detection systems: Early detection mechanisms prevent fuel wastage and environmental damage.
  • Venting and spill containment: Proper venting reduces pressure build-up, while spill containment minimises risks.

Installation and Maintenance

A well-installed tank ensures compliance with industry regulations, minimises environmental risks, and enhances longevity. Routine maintenance reduces the likelihood of costly repairs and extends the tank’s service life.

  • Proper Installation: Follow manufacturer guidelines and adhere to local regulations to ensure a secure and compliant setup. Consider factors such as tank placement, foundation stability, and accessibility for maintenance.
  • Regular maintenance practices: Conduct routine inspections to identify wear and potential leaks, perform leak checks using monitoring systems, and schedule periodic servicing of components such as pumps, valves, and filters. Regular maintenance also includes removing water and contaminants from the fuel to prevent tank degradation and operational issues.

Cost and Budget

  • Evaluating Cost Vs. Long-Term Benefits: Investing in high-quality self bunded fuel tanks reduces long-term maintenance costs and ensures reliability.
  • Budgeting For Installation and Maintenance: Consider additional expenses for installation, accessories, and periodic servicing.

We had a great experience working with Durotank on our order for a 2,400L water cart trailer, set up for firefighting and tree watering. Their team was responsive throughout the process and delivered exactly what we needed on schedule, despite a very tight timeframe. The build quality is excellent - it’s clear a lot of care and expertise went into the manufacturing. We also value being able to support an Australian-made company and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Durotank for both their product quality and service.

We purchased Durotank’s 2400 Litre poly water trailer with fire-fighter pump and hose reel, plus optional dribble bar and batter sprays attached.

Our property, Duxton Farm, borders the Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. Because of this, early season burning is extremely important to prevent uncontrollable bushfires later in the dry season. The trailer has been an invaluable asset to fire control – always full and ready to go when the call comes.

We’ve found it to be well balanced, empty or full, with the baffle ball system effectively controlling surge. We have had no issues with set-up, towing it with either a Landcruiser or Hilux.

Overall, we’re extremely happy with our purchase and the support from the Durotank team. We’ll be back. quote-02
