Self bunded tanks

Top features to look for in Self-Bunded Diesel and AdBlue Tanks

Storing fuels like diesel and AdBlue safely and efficiently is critical for many businesses, especially those operating in agriculture, construction, mining, or transport. Self-bunded diesel tanks also known as tank-within-a-tank systems have become the preferred solution because of their superior safety features and environmental protection benefits. If you’re considering investing in one, understanding their key features will help you make the right choice for your needs.

What Are Self-Bunded Tanks and How Do They Work?

Self-bunded tanks feature a double-wall construction: an inner tank that holds the fuel or liquid, and an outer containment shell designed to capture any leaks or spills. This design significantly reduces the risk of environmental contamination and enhances workplace safety.

Inner Tank

Typically made from steel or polyethylene, the inner tank is the main reservoir for your liquid. It is built to withstand the properties of the fluid stored, such as diesel or AdBlue.

Outer Tank

The outer shell acts as a secondary barrier to contain spills, leaks, or overflow, protecting soil and groundwater from contamination.

Ventilation System

Proper ventilation prevents pressure build-up inside the tank, ensuring safe gas release and maintaining structural integrity.

Monitoring Systems

Modern self-bunded tanks include leak detection sensors and overfill alarms that alert operators to potential hazards immediately.

Benefits of Choosing Self-Bunded Tanks

Benefits of Choosing Self-Bunded Tanks

Enhanced Safety

The double-walled design drastically reduces the chances of leaks, protecting employees, contractors, and nearby communities from exposure to hazardous substances.

Environmental Protection

Strict environmental regulations require businesses to prevent soil and water contamination. Self-bunded tanks help you comply with these standards, reducing your risk of costly cleanups and fines.

Cost-Effectiveness Over Time

While self-bunded tanks may require a higher upfront investment, they save money long term by minimising environmental risks, reducing maintenance costs, and avoiding penalties.

Versatility for Various Applications

Whether you’re storing diesel for a farming fleet, AdBlue for vehicle emissions compliance, or oils for machinery, self-bunded tanks offer a reliable solution adaptable across industries.

What to Look For When Choosing a Self-Bunded Tank

What to Look For When Choosing a Self-Bunded Tank

Capacity: Right-Sizing Your Tank

Selecting the right capacity is crucial. Consider your current fuel consumption, delivery schedules, and potential business growth. A tank too small will require frequent refills, disrupting operations and increasing transport costs. Conversely, an oversized tank ties up capital and occupies valuable space.

For example, a medium-sized agricultural business might require a 5,000-litre tank to store enough diesel for seasonal equipment, whereas a large construction site might need multiple tanks exceeding 20,000 litres each.

Material Quality: Steel vs. Polyethylene

  • Polyethylene Tanks: These are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and resistant to dents or impacts. They’re easier to transport and install, making them ideal for remote locations or temporary setups. Poly tanks typically have a lifespan suitable for long-term use with minimal maintenance.
  • Steel Tanks: Known for their strength and durability, steel tanks handle high pressures and large volumes better than polyethylene. They are often chosen for permanent installations or harsh environments. Regular maintenance like painting or rust protection is necessary to maximise their lifespan.

Security Features: Protecting Your Investment

Safety features extend beyond the double-wall design. Look for tanks with:

  • Lockable fill points to prevent unauthorised access and theft.
  • Built-in alarm systems that notify you of tampering or leaks.
  • Ventilation systems designed to safely release gases without risking explosions.
  • Spill containment and overfill protection mechanisms

These elements ensure your tank not only complies with regulations but also protects your business assets.

Compliance and Regulations: Staying on the Right Side of the Law

Fuel storage is subject to strict environmental and safety laws. In Australia, this includes adherence to:

Understanding and meeting these standards is crucial to avoiding fines and maintaining your company’s reputation.

Portability and Installation: Efficiency Matters

Features like forklift pockets and lifting lugs make a big difference if your tanks need to be moved frequently or installed in hard-to-reach areas. Quick installation means less downtime and faster project starts, important for temporary worksites or seasonal operations.

Monitoring and Management Systems: Stay in Control

Integrated systems like digital fuel level gauges and remote monitoring platforms allow you to track your fuel usage in real time. Automated dispensing systems reduce human error and speed up refuelling processes, while maintenance alerts help prevent unexpected breakdowns.

Customisation Options: Tailored to Your Needs

Many suppliers offer customisable tanks to suit unique operational requirements. These can include:

  • Integrated dispensing units with hoses and nozzles.
  • Filtration systems to ensure fuel purity.
  • Heating elements to maintain fuel flow in cold climates.
  • Level indicators with wireless connectivity.

Customisation ensures your tank works efficiently within your existing infrastructure.

Additional Features: Boosting Convenience and Performance

Consider optional add-ons such as:

  • High-quality filtration to protect sensitive engines.
  • Level sight gauges for quick visual checks.
  • Secondary containment trays to catch spills during refuelling.
  • Robust weatherproof coatings to extend tank life

These features contribute to smoother operations and peace of mind.

We had a great experience working with Durotank on our order for a 2,400L water cart trailer, set up for firefighting and tree watering. Their team was responsive throughout the process and delivered exactly what we needed on schedule, despite a very tight timeframe. The build quality is excellent - it’s clear a lot of care and expertise went into the manufacturing. We also value being able to support an Australian-made company and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Durotank for both their product quality and service.

We purchased Durotank’s 2400 Litre poly water trailer with fire-fighter pump and hose reel, plus optional dribble bar and batter sprays attached.

Our property, Duxton Farm, borders the Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. Because of this, early season burning is extremely important to prevent uncontrollable bushfires later in the dry season. The trailer has been an invaluable asset to fire control – always full and ready to go when the call comes.

We’ve found it to be well balanced, empty or full, with the baffle ball system effectively controlling surge. We have had no issues with set-up, towing it with either a Landcruiser or Hilux.

Overall, we’re extremely happy with our purchase and the support from the Durotank team. We’ll be back. quote-02
