Custom Built Waste Oil Tanks for VTG Waste and Recycling
VTG is a territory-owned waste and recycling business that operates across a wide spectrum of waste management; from collecting commercial, construction and demolition waste to liquid waste management, and kerbside and household waste collection. VTG approached the team at Durotank to find a practical storage solution that could assist with waste oil collection.
Project
VTG had specific requirements that needed to be met. They wanted multiple tanks to store waste oil and for each tank to have 3 suction points and 3 fill points. This was so that multiple trucks could access a tank at one time. They also required an engine-driven pump capable of dealing with 1-inch solids within the waste oil. These solids included nuts and bolts from mechanics that had fallen into the oil during jobs. The pump also needed to have a high flow rate so that on arrival it could pull from the waste collection truck and could empty from the tank to a truck for oil disposal.
VTG needed tanks to be easy to maintain. And for additional flexibility, they wanted a tank that when empty could be moved from site to site to be utilised wherever it was next required.
Durotank turned to their team of in-house engineers to come up with the best solution for VTG’s waste oil management. They developed a modified design for 33,000L, 67,000L and 100,000L Smart Tanks and supplied a visual drawing to demonstrate how the design would work to meet the requirements. The design team worked with VTG to fine-tune the design before the tank was even purchased.
The final layout included installing an indented sump in the floor so that anything left in the tank could be pushed into the sump and easily removed. To assist with transportation, the design team came up with the clever idea of redesigning the 33,000L tank to sit within a 20ft shipping container footprint with container pin locks so offering ease of transport when empty.
Results
VTG were thrilled with the project outcome and the resulting premium quality custom-designed and finished Smart Tanks. They were also happy to work with a 100% Australian made business that supported local economies.
The final products were three custom-designed Smart Tanks with the following exact specifications:
- 33,000L 67,000L and 100,00L Smart Tanks
- 3 suction and 3 fill points
- A diesel-driven trash pump with the ability to pass up to 1” solid pieces.
- An indented floor for easy cleaning with a drainpipe for removing all liquids.
- A last-minute request to have the 33kl tank painted in the distinctive and stunning VTG green colour.
- Custom branded signage on tanks.

Our property, Duxton Farm, borders the Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. Because of this, early season burning is extremely important to prevent uncontrollable bushfires later in the dry season. The trailer has been an invaluable asset to fire control – always full and ready to go when the call comes.
We’ve found it to be well balanced, empty or full, with the baffle ball system effectively controlling surge. We have had no issues with set-up, towing it with either a Landcruiser or Hilux.
Overall, we’re extremely happy with our purchase and the support from the Durotank team. We’ll be back.
