Differences between a Single Wall and Double Wall (Self Bunded) Fuel Tanks
When choosing between single and double wall fuel tanks there are several key factors to consider. The most significant include size, cost, maintenance and purpose. Assessing your tank requirements in relation to these will help you work out the best solution for your organisation.
Traditional Single Wall Fuel Tanks
Historically metal single wall fuel tanks have been used to support fuel requirements particularly for agriculture. They were installed as overhead metal tanks based off the ground with tall leg supports and offering between 2000-4000L fuel capacity.
Although previously popular, such a design made them impractical and open to a number of difficulties. These included being dangerous for refuelling companies to fill, dirty and hard to clean, a high environmental risk of soil contamination, and when old and rusty the tanks were liable to contaminate fuel.
Advanced Single Wall Fuel Tanks
With the risks associated with these original fuel tanks, farms and organisations began exploring different fuel tank alternatives and more advanced Single Wall tanks were developed.
Durotank’s Single Wall tanks eliminate the outlined risks associated with instability and impracticality of original designs. They are stable, offer a much larger fuel capacity with tanks available in 8,000-65,000L sizes and provide custom fuel storage options. In addition Durotank Single Wall tanks have a number of other quality features.
Single wall tanks provide a cost-effective, practical solution to fuel storage in comparison to the higher costs associated with the double walls and additional features of self bunded fuel tanks. They have safety and design features that offer significant improvement from original agricultural fuel tanks. Firstly they showcase safety signage as per Australian regulations. They come equipped with a lockable spill box and a calibrated dipstick indicating safe fill levels. Their domed roof stops water/dirt pooling whilst there is a bulk fill point for fast, safe refilling. They feature 4 lift points for easy moving and transportation and a manway for access to the tank.
Self Bunded Fuel Tanks
Self-bunded or double walled fuel tanks are available in larger sizes and offer more features than Single Wall tanks and cater further to stringent industry or company regulations around fuel storage and safety.
Durotank’s self bunded fuel tanks are available in 10,000 to 100,000L sizes and offer outstanding features for safe fuel storage. Double walls allow for increased protection, with the inner and outer tank gap catching leakage and reducing the possibility of any environmental contamination. A robust structure combined with other key safety features make them ideal for storage and refuelling purposes.
Three further elements which prevent fuel leakage are an overfill protection valve, an anti-syphon valve and a calibrated dipstick. An overfill protection valve stops excess spillage occurrence comes with a refuelling alarm and an automatic closing mechanism that shuts the pipe once the threshold is reached. Assurance is further increased with the installation of an anti-syphon valve which prevents leakage if any valve are left opened, or pipework cracks. To further verify fuel levels a calibrated dipstick is used to accurately measure fuel levels.
Optimum safety is already a priority with self bunded fuel tanks so additional bunding and physical containment decisions are unnecessary with the double wall already complying with safe storage requirements. A domed roof serves as a barrier to wind and rain and controls emissions from the tank. Under tank visibility ensures safety as all areas are visible which deal with possible leakage. Reliability and safety is also increased with lockable pump equipment storage options available whilst relocation is made easy with 4 lift tank points. Our Self Bunded tanks also come equipped with a waver non-return valve with 80mm male fitting with a fire safe flange ball valve.
